The Yotel Washington DC is the first hotel in the nation to receive the Autism Friendly designation from Autism Speaks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to autism awareness and research.
"This designation represents more than a certification — it's a commitment to hospitality without barriers," said Matt Sommers, general manager of the property.
The boutique hotel, which opened in 2021, offers 377 guest rooms and 20,000 square feet of meeting space. Groups also have two dining outlets at their disposal: an al-fresco, all-day dining restaurant, and a rooftop bar.
According to Autism Speaks, the Yotel was awarded the Autism Friendly designation in recognition of its "dedicated commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where both neurodiverse and neurotypical guests feel welcomed and supported." This includes specialized training that the front desk team has completed to understand and meet the needs of guests on the autism spectrum. In addition, the hotel features designated quiet areas and specialized lighting in guest rooms to create a sensory-friendly environment.
The Yotel Washington DC is located downtown near Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It is less than a mile from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
"We are proud to set a national standard and create a space where every guest feels seen, valued and supported," said Portia Hood, associate director of sales for the hotel.
