You might very well find yourself in Milwaukee for an event at the newly expanded and inviting Baird Center — and once you're there, the city begs to be explored. From the walkable Deer District and downtown area to nearby historic neighborhoods like Walker's Point and the Third Ward, there is much to take in. Consider these finds, both classic and a little unexpected, to get you started.

1. Indulge in Summerfest

Over three weekends every summer, the world’s largest music festival happens here, adjacent to Lake Michigan and the city’s Third Ward. You’ll find 12 stages with some of the globe’s biggest acts, along with what must be the world’s most jumbo soft pretzels. Immerse yourself in the local delicacies while witnessing both local acts and world-renowned headliners.

3 End of an Era

Millie and Sadie, the mini goldendoodles who have roamed freely in the halls of the Hilton Milwaukee for years, are set to retire this fall along with their owner, concierge Rusty Dahler. Will a new pup step in? These canine hosts have been an iconic part of this classic Milwaukee hotel — look for their photo on-site and keep up with their adventures on Instagram.

4. Floating Gourmet

Acclaimed local eats or a river cruise? Honestly, it's difficult to decide: Do both if you can! We had the opportunity to experience them simultaneously. Local chef Adam Pawlak, Hell’s Kitchen contestant and four-time Milwaukee’s Best Chef honoree, can be booked for workshops or private events — or even for an Edelweiss Boat Cruise. Delectable risotto prepared on the water? Chef Adam is full of surprises, and both he and/or the river cruise are highly recommended.
