A surge of development has taken place over the past several years south of Cancún, Mexico's Caribbean hot spot on the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula. That area, south of Cancún International Airport and down to the fishing village of Puerto Morelos and beyond, has become more commonly known as the Riviera Cancún — a gateway riviera, if you will, connecting the tourist resort town to the Riviera Maya. The area is blessed with beautiful beaches and quite a few resorts among them — including a growing number of all-inclusive gems with meeting space. Here are five that are well worth investigating.

Haven Riviera Cancún

A newcomer on the riviera scene, this tranquil, 333-room luxury resort debuted last summer. It sits on a secluded, 250-acre parcel of land that's populated by wildlife and is part of a national protected area. The VIP oceanfront rooms are called "Serenity Club" accommodations — with an exclusive check-in spot, butler service, swim-up suites and more. This is an adults-only resort, to maintain that tranquility.

This fall, the property will get a lot more serious about meetings: A 25,000-square-foot convention center is being built on-site, along with an additional 105 double-occupancy guest suites — specifically tailored to meet convention-group needs. Keeping the whole enterprise from being overly business-like, the new facility will have its own porte cochere and lobby; it will be a short walk from the rest of the resort, and will be slightly separated from the serenity closer to the ocean. A 14,500-square-foot, pillarless main ballroom will have soaring 22-foot ceilings and plenty of natural light.

Royalton Riviera Cancún

This 843-room luxury property wants to welcome all types of beach-seekers, with three distinct sections: family-friendly, adults-only and the Diamond Club, for high-rolling VIPs. The resort has more than 20,000 square feet of indoor event space — including a large ballroom, three breakout rooms, a spacious foyer and four smaller meeting rooms. There are eight F&B options on-site.

Grand Residences

This 144-suite resort, just a stone's throw from the town of Puerto Morelos, offers both all-inclusive and à la carte plans. The family-friendly luxury property has plenty of outdoor gathering space and meeting rooms to accommodate up to 72 people. Bicycles are available for those who want to make the short trip into town.

This hacienda-style, 440-suite, adults-only resort in Riviera Cancún features 11 international restaurants, among them unique Indian and French offerings. Groups gather in the nearly 20,000 square feet of meeting space, which features a 5,920-square-foot ballroom and two large breakout rooms. Truly memorable events make use of the 10,000 square feet of oceanfront terraces and a spectacular stretch of beach for cocktails and receptions.

Now Natura Riviera Cancún

This brand-new luxury resort is 10 miles from the airport but surrounded by Mayan jungle. The 553 rooms look out over a lazy river and exotic fish ponds, with the deep blue-green of the Caribbean just beyond. More than 18,600 square feet of meeting space is slated to open in April, large enough to seat 1,900 theater-style or serve a banquet for up to 900 diners. A Now Spa by Pevonia features a design inspired by cenotes, the region's natural sinkholes.
