Here's What a City's Meetings Infrastructure Looks Like in the Metaverse

A part of Atlanta's downtown now can be explored virtually, thanks to the city's convention and visitors bureau.

The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau has unveiled Atlanta Meta World, making it the first destination to have created a metaverse experience. Planners will be able to interact with staff as well as view presentations on the latest meeting venue, hotel and restaurant developments in the city, and gives them a virtual way to become familiar with the destination.

The new experience also offers a more sustainable option for site visits.

To enter Atlanta Meta World, users must create a log in and choose their own avatar. Upon entering the platform, your virtual self arrives in Centennial Olympic Park where the ACVB has its visitors information center. From there, users can explore (and even fly around) the 22-acre space in the city's downtown. The entire virtual world is topographically accurate, from buildings to trees to benches.

"If customers will be shopping for meeting destinations and travel experiences in the metaverse, ACVB wants to be there to influence their decision-making," said William Pate, president and CEO of the bureau. "If the metaverse realizes its full potential over the next decade, destinations will be early adopters to the platform [in order to] market and promote immersive experiences in their cities."

Avatars currently can visit hotels and restaurants surrounding the park, as well as the College Football Hall of Fame. The CVB hopes to complete the convention center experience by the end of this year.

"We are excited to add the metaverse to our marketing mix," said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president and CMO of the ACVB. "This will also provide our hospitality partners with the opportunity to create their own metaverse experience within the platform."
