Gilberto Kauil Ché is a multilingual guide for Community Tours Sian Ka'an, a collective that provides tours in and around the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kauil, who speaks the Maya yucateco language as well as Spanish, English and French, was born and raised in a traditional Mayan village and now shares insight into numerous Mayan customs as a guide — from making traditional Mayan food to mixing ancient Mayan mortar, from beekeeping to offering tips on surviving in the jungle. He believes that sharing and publicizing his community's traditions are key to preserving them for future generations.
