While the Kentucky Derby is always Louisville's most notable event each year, the state's largest city has welcomed several gatherings that have boosted its meetings cachet in 2024. In August alone, Louisville led the country's secondary markets in year-over-year meetings volume growth by a long shot, according to Knowland, increasing 104.6 percent over August 2023, driven by national association meetings.

According to Louisville Tourism, the third-largest industry in the state is tourism, and of the $14.5 billion of economic impact visitors to Kentucky generated in 2023, fully $3.4 billion came from Louisville.

"Louisville is experiencing a landmark year, marked by record-breaking visitation at city attractions, Urban Bourbon experiences, festivals and airport traffic, giving us a new baseline to continue our growth into 2025," said Cleo Battle, president and CEO, Louisville Tourism. "Bourbon City's tourism sector is thriving, with exciting developments on the horizon, including new Bourbon experiences, enhanced attractions and additional hotel projects."

Winning with sports

May also was a big month for the city, marked by two top-notch sporting events. By far, the biggest crowd-pleaser in Louisville brings in a wealth of both visitors and dollars. The estimated economic impact for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, which is held the first weekend in May, is more than $405 million, with 256,000 in attendance. Only the National Farm Machinery Show and Championship Tractor Pull, which happened Feb. 14–17, brought in more people — 305,000 — with an estimated economic impact of $24 million.

The 106th PGA Championship, one of golf's four majors each year, brought in quite the crowd May 16–19, with 200,000 people generating an estimated $78.5 million in impact.

Northstar came to town

Northstar Meetings Group added to the city's yearly growth with June's Small & Boutique Summer event, held at the 205-room Hotel Distil, an Autograph Collection property from Marriott, and the Ice House event space.

More than 100 meeting professionals were in attendance, as planners planners looking to place meetings with 100 room nights or fewer on peak met one-on-one with suppliers of appropriately sized venues. Education session presenters included Meridan Zerner, a registered dietician with the Cooper Clinic, who spoke on using foods along with lifestyle changes to support better moods; and Greg Bogue, chief brand and experience officer for third-party powerhouse Maritz, who talked about intentionally designing events to be personal, powerful and memorable experiences.

Activities and off-site venues served to highlight the unique charm of the destination. During the opening reception, attendees had the opportunity to decorate Derby hats, followed the next night by the chance to wear those new hats to a fun and enlightening evening at the Kentucky Derby Museum on the Churchill Downs grounds. Reception highlights included a greeting by the official bugler, dinner in the facility's Great Hall and a guided tour of the famous racetrack.

Meetings industry support is growing

Meeting Professionals International held its annual World Education Congress in Louisville May 20–22, just after the major sporting events, giving participants a chance to experience this evolving meetings destination.

MPI brought in nearly 2,000 event professionals to the Kentucky International Convention Center for three days of education and networking. The economic impact of their visit was expected to be around $3 million, with the anticipated additional benefit that planners will choose Louisville for their own events in the coming years.

A host of other hospitality events are headed to Louisville next year. "We are looking forward to hosting a trifecta of industry events in 2025, including Travel South Global Summit and Media Marketplace, PCMA EduCon and Maritz Global Events Activate," said Battle.
