Madrid is a leader. It’s a leader as a business tourism destination and a leader in sustainability initiatives. The Spanish capital was a pioneer in environment-friendly practices long before it was fashionable. Madrid’s actions and efforts have even earned it global recognition and awards. But as a leader, it’s not content with the status quo. Its goal, now more than ever, is sustainability excellence in the events sector.
The Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB) is a body that works to promote the Spanish capital as a destination for conferences, events and meetings. This year, the two cornerstones that underpin its annual roadmap are sustainability and legacy. Intrinsically linked, sustainability encompas¬ses the fields of ecology, the environment and social settings; and legacy represents the positive footprint that these types of professional events leave on the city afterwards. It goes without saying that, over the past year, the MCB and its more than 200 affiliated companies have successfully adapted and responded to guests and visitors in Madrid while the city has continued to host in-person events and meetings.
The Advantages of Using a Digital Planning Platform
Sustainability, legacy and positive impact are three key aspects of Madrid’s MICE tourism strategy. And, thanks to the recent addition of a new digital planning platform, these three pillars will be integrated into professional conferences and events held in the capital. The Tourism Department, in collaboration with Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), has launched PLUS (Platform for Legacy with Us).
PLUS is the new digital platform that Madrid Convention Bureau makes available to any meeting organizer so that sustainability and legacy criteria are included in the design phase. Thanks to PLUS, event organizers are able to evaluate a series of aspects about the event during the design phase. What’s more, the various available reports are adapted to each event’s specific characteristics, such as attendees, venues, type of layout and set-up, catering services, etc. The platform also generates a post-meeting report, which calculates the total CO2 emissions and, in a later phase, will suggest ways to compensate the event’s impact on a local level within the city of Madrid.
Pre-Planning Your Agenda is a PLUS
PLUS facilitates contact between organizers and local agents for the implementation of positive impact actions (social, environmental and cultural) that result in lasting benefits to society. PLUS features a specific section to connect event organizers with representatives from a range of organizations located in Madrid, suggesting methods to contribute to this legacy project in the city. MCB will run free training sessions for its partners, targeting DMCs and PCOs, to promote the advantages and benefits of using this digital platform.
What differentiates this tool from other initiatives is that the analytical report of the meeting is made before it is held, which allows corrective actions to be taken in the planning phase. This means that the tool is not so much a calculator of negative impact with compensation proposals but rather a tool to minimize this impact and facilitate real implementation of the United Nations Organization’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the creation of a legacy strategy during the event. The platform is available on demand by contacting the Madrid Convention Bureau’s Legacy & Sustainability Department.
