For our inaugural episode, Eventful tackles
a topic of growing importance to the events industry. Anywhere from 30
million to 40 million people in the world today are estimated to be
victims of human trafficking, held against their will for forced labor
or sexual exploitation. Many of them are children.
Loren
Edelstein, Northstar Meetings Group's vice president, content
director, speaks with Cheryl-Anne Sturken, contributing editor and
author of Meetings & Conventions' recent cover story on the topic,
about why hotel brands, industry leaders and meeting planners are
sounding the alarm on human trafficking, and ways to combat it. The
conversation touches on a number of vital points about the issue,
including:
- Why human trafficking has become a bigger problem than ever — and why it's a concern for meeting planners.
- Why planners should find out if the hotels at which they are staying have human-trafficking policies.
- What industry organizations are doing to combat this challenge.
- How meeting planners can spot and respond to incidents of human trafficking.
