The Michelin Guide, which is often recognized as the gold standard of culinary excellence, announced today that it will be expanding its coverage with a new edition for the American Great Lakes. The multi-city guide will include Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh.
According to Michelin, its anonymous inspectors are already in the field, scouting out the best dining spots across the region. Winners will be revealed at the Michelin Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony in 2027. The date and details of the ceremony will be announced in the near future.
"The Michelin Guide is committed to fostering a culture of travel and dining by helping people discover unforgettable culinary experiences in new destinations," said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide. "We are excited to finally be putting a stake in the ground in the Great Lakes region, spotlighting the talent and food cultures across these six great cities."
Cities are eager to showcase their culinary chops
The destinations all eagerly shared the news across their social media accounts. Local leaders noted that Michelin-star recognition will help elevate their city's reputation, drive tourism and boost the economy.
"Being included in the newest edition of the Michelin Guide is a transformational moment for our destination," said Claude Molinari, president and CEO of Visit Detroit. "It signals to the world that our culinary scene has reached a level of excellence that's worth traveling for. We know from global trends that destinations included in the Michelin Guide see increased visitation, longer stays and higher visitor spending — so this isn't just about recognition, it's about real economic momentum for our entire region."
Visit Milwaukee's president and CEO Peggy Williams-Smith expressed similar sentiments. "A Michelin Star can change lives. It can elevate chefs, energize neighborhoods and bring global attention to a city," she said. "Today, Milwaukee steps onto that global stage, and the world is about to discover what we have known all along: Milwaukee is one of America's great food cities."
Michelin Guide is growing its footprint
The Michelin Guide was originally launched in 1900 in France, and the first North American Guide was published in 2005. Over the past two decades, several U.S. cities and regions have been added to the prestigious restaurant ratings guide. Boston, Philadelphia and the American South are the most recent additions, all from 2025. Michelin will release its inaugural Southwest guide, which will include Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, later this year.
