Jorge Franz has been named president of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, a role that will expand the responsibilities of his current position as senior vice president of tourism and industry relations for Houston First Corporation. Franz will retain that title, which will remain his primary role. The GHCVB is a membership organization that works in alignment with Houston First, the official destination management organization for Houston. The expansion of Franz's responsibilities is meant to bring the organizations and their missions more closely together.
"Jorge will do an outstanding job with this added responsibility," said Michael Heckman, interim president and CEO of Houston First, in a statement. "He is very familiar with the business of the GHCVB and is a tremendous ambassador for Houston and our hospitality community." Franz has held roles with both organizations since 2001 to promote the city.
Franz will continue to report to Heckman but will also be charged with working with the chair and board of the GHCVB to bring all stakeholders together. Houston First Corp. will also create a new GHCVB executive director position to focus purely on GHCVB initiatives. A search process for that new role will soon be underway.
"Houston First is laser-focused on the recovery of our hospitality industry," said David Mincberg, CEO of Flagship Properties Corp. and chair of the Houston First board of directors. "This appointment will help drive the GHCVB forward and demonstrates and reinforces the commitment of Houston First to our hospitality community and partners."
