1. City of Lights

If you’re in Yellowknife, up in Canada’s Northwest Territories, it’s probably to see the Aurora. You can make plans to ogle it every night: It’s visible up to 240 nights a year, but no two shows are the same. Indigenous-owned, family-run Aurora Village is a great option.

2. Party in an Ice Castle

The Snowking Winter Festival takes place each March on the frozen surface of Great Slave Lake. The fun is centered in and around a wildly impressive castle, handmade each year out of snow and ice — with steel supports and electricity. On the agenda are performances and exhibits, as well as private events.

3. (Really) Cold Plunge

For a unique experience in a restored Canadian Coast Guard vessel, climb aboard the Arctic Duchess. It's hot-and-cold therapy with a frigid backdrop, but the wood-fired cedar saunas and cold plunge in icy Great Slave Lake stay with you.

4. Snowmobile Getaway

Tours for any skill level from Yellowknife Outdoor Adventures take you speeding over the frozen Great Slave Lake surface to a secluded cabin retreat known as Aurora Island Lodge. Accessible in the summer months by boat, this charming outpost showcases local nature.

5. Canine Transport

If you visit during the long winter season, traditional dog-sledding is both a cultural adventure and a glorious way to get around. North of 60 Adventures offers rides, as well as snowshoeing excursions, meals in a heated sky dome, axe-throwing and more.
