Events like the September 11 attack, the 2008 recession and the pandemic disrupted the world and the impacted the way that we do business. During Destination Southeast, Northstar's hosted-buyer event that was held Aug. 18-20 at the Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa in Point Clear, Ala., Dr. Gerald Jones, principle and founder of Get Fit Consulting, spoke about the importance of embracing and fostering change.

According to Jones, leading transformational change requires a blend of commitment, adaptability and strategic thinking.  Following are his 10 essential truths for effectively leading change:

1. Commit to completion: Success hinges on your ability to finish what you start. It's not enough to set ambitious goals, you must see them through to the end. Reflect on your progress and measure your achievements against your objectives.

2. Ignite the change: Understand the underlying reasons for the change and the impact it will have. Effective leadership involves identifying what needs to be ignited within your organization to drive transformation.

3. Embrace continuous innovation: Change is constant and inevitable. Adaptability is crucial; if you stick to old ways, you'll miss out on new opportunities. Stay ahead by continuously evolving and innovating.

4. Create space for change: Avoid getting trapped in outdated practices. Allow room for new ideas and approaches, which are essential in today's fast-paced world.

5. Challenge the status quo: If you do what you've always done, you'll get the same results. Be willing to disrupt existing patterns and explore new methods to foster growth.

6. Focus on the bigger picture: Remember that change is often about something larger than yourself. Align your efforts with broader organizational goals to ensure that change serves a greater purpose.

7. Prepare for black swans: Any unprecedented situation that is out of your control, e.g., September 11, the pandemic and even the recent CrowdStrike global outage, can all be classified as "black swans." Anticipate unexpected events that could disrupt your plans. By being prepared for potential black swans, you can navigate crises more effectively.

8. Leverage collaboration: Success in transformational change often depends on collaboration. Build strong relationships and seek input from diverse perspectives to overcome challenges.

9. Prioritize innovation: Society is currently undergoing the fourth industrial revolution, with technological advances like artificial intelligence. Embrace innovation as a key driver of change. Continually seek ways to improve and adapt through creative solutions and new technologies.

10. Reflect and adapt: Regularly assess your strategies and outcomes. Reflect on what has worked, what hasn't, and make necessary adjustments to stay relevant and effective.
