One of the largest convention centers in the country is getting even better by improving and enhancing the experience for its guests and raising the bar for convention standards. The country’s second-largest convention center which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) already dazzles clients and guests with 2.1 million square feet of exhibit space, 1,100 access points to its wireless network and its unbeatable location in the heart of Orlando’s tourism corridor.
But the next five years are sure to elevate the OCCC into an even more dynamic and sought-after event space. In late 2018, leaders received approvals to move forward with a $605 million North-South Building improvement and expansion project, including the Convention Way Grand Concourse and a new Multipurpose venue. These projects will expand its exhibit space to a total of 2.3 million square feet, adding more connectivity, more flexibility and more ways to deliver immersive experiences and world-class events.
With these enhancements, it will be easier than ever for attendees to get around. The new Convention Way Grand Concourse is an enclosed connection between the North and South concourses including additional meeting space and an 80,000-square-foot ballroom with grand entrance to the North-South building along Convention Way. A new Multipurpose Venue adds 200,000 square feet of additional flexible, divisible, column-free space while incorporating connectivity between the North and South concourses. And this venue features retractable and floor seating for up to 20,000 guests, with perfect views from every seat.
“With a major convention center expansion, unprecedented hotel inventory growth, new dining and entertainment venues and new attractions, the next few years will be some of the most transformative years for Orlando as a meetings and convention destination,” said George Aguel, President and CEO of Visit Orlando.
The OCCC is also in the process of creating Wellness Rooms and Networking Spaces to be located around campus. A Wellness Room is a dedicated, private space that can be used for nursing mothers, meditation, prayer and more. Each room will be outfitted with a chair and table for ensured comfort. A Networking Space will be either a formal room or an open gathering space, which can be used for informal gatherings and meetings. These areas also provide basic charging and connectivity capabilities.
What’s more, a $3 billion dollar expansion to the Orlando International Airport will bring in more flights daily from around the world, helping attendees get here easier than ever before. And once they arrive, the convention center is within walking distance of more than 42 hotels and over 75 world-class restaurants with countless attractions within a 2-mile radius. When attendees come for a meeting, they can stay for so much more. Orlando continues to evolve and enhance. And that’s the reason we’re consistently ranked by Cvent as the #1 meeting destination in the U.S.
