Jack Johnson, a longtime leader within the tourism and destination marketing industry, passed away on Oct. 28. He worked for Destinations International for nearly a decade, before retiring at the end of 2025. In his role as chief advocacy officer, Johnson educated government officials on the value of destination marketing, developed tools and resources for destination marketing organizations around the world, and helped cities navigate travel boycotts and other challenges.

Destinations International president and CEO Don Welsh announced the news in a letter on the organization's website.

"Jack's legacy and contributions will live for decades to come," said Welsh. “He was a visionary thought leader and trusted confidant to many, highly respected for his knowledge and forward-thinking leadership for the DMO community. Jack was a friend and mentor to many of the DI team, as well as Choose Chicago and multiple DMO leaders and partners in our industry.”

Impact on Chicago tourism

Prior to joining Destinations International, Johnson helped launch Choose Chicago in 2012. The organization was founded by combining the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau with the tourism portion of Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, in an effort to streamline services, reduce costs and improve the city's competitiveness. He served the organization for seven years.

Johnson also previously worked for Chicago's Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority for nearly two decades, during a period of expansion projects at McCormick Place convention center. Earlier in his career, he spent four years as a legislative analyst for the Illinois House of Representatives.

Honoring his legacy

Johnson was named one of Northstar Meetings Group's industry influencers in 2022 and 2018. He was also featured in an episode of the Eventful podcast about how CVBs can better serve their communities.

A celebration of his life and legacy is scheduled to take place in San Antonio in mid-November. Full details have not yet been announced.
