DNC Trims 2028 Convention Host-City Finalists to Three

The Democratic Party has narrowed its list of potential host cities for the 2028 Democratic National Convention to Boston, Denver and Philadelphia.

In a statement, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin said the three cities submitted "incredibly strong bids" and noted the convention — which will take place Aug. 7-10, 2028 — will be an "inspiring celebration of our party's future nominee."

According to the Associated Press, the field was reduced from five candidate cities after site visits this spring. Atlanta and Chicago were eliminated from consideration, though the DNC did not publicly explain its decision.

The three remaining contenders combine large-scale event infrastructure with access to key Democratic constituencies, fundraising networks and suburban voter bases that have become increasingly important in recent election cycles. Philadelphia last hosted the Democratic convention in 2016, Denver in 2008 and Boston in 2004. The party's most recent convention was held in Chicago in 2024.

Boston proposal centers on TD Garden

If selected, Boston would host with TD Garden serving as the primary venue. The Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center would host delegation activities, media operations and other convention-related events.

Denver bid highlights downtown event campus

Denver's plan calls for marquee convention sessions at Ball Arena, formerly the Pepsi Center, while the Colorado Convention Center would accommodate meetings, caucuses and supporting programming.

Philadelphia proposal spans two key venues

In Philadelphia, convention proceedings would take place at Xfinity Mobile Arena, formerly known as the Wells Fargo Center. The Pennsylvania Convention Center would host caucus meetings, daytime programming and ancillary events.

Republicans already have 2028 host city

While Democrats have yet to make a final selection, Republicans have already chosen Houston as the host city for the 2028 Republican National Convention.

Benefits await the host

Political conventions generate significant business for host destinations, filling hotel rooms, driving demand for transportation services and creating opportunities for convention centers, venues and local suppliers. The Democratic convention is expected to bring tens of thousands of delegates, media representatives, staff and visitors to the selected city.
