Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts opened its first property, Banyan Tree Phuket, in 1994 in Phuket, Thailand. Now, a quarter century later, the Asian hotelier is celebrating its 25th anniversary with significant international growth, it announced this week.
Presently, Singapore-based Banyan operates 49 hotels across four brands: Banyan Tree, Angsana, Dhawa and Cassia. That number now is slated to grow by more than 50 percent, according to the company, which said it has recently signed 27 additional hotel agreements encompassing five Banyan Tree, 10 Angsana, some Dhaka and two Cassia properties.
Scheduled to open within the next three years, the new projects encompass 17 hotels in China; five in Southeast Asia (one in Cambodia, one in Indonesia and three in Vietnam); two in Europe (Spain's Canary Islands and Salzburg, Austria); and one each in Japan, Micronesia (Palau) and Oceania (Fiji).
Meanwhile, Banyan is on track to open seven more new properties this year. Highlights include Banyan's first European property, the 199-room Angsana Corfu in Greece (pictured above), which will debut in July with a spa, an infinity pool and five restaurants; the 230-room Angsana Teluk Bahaing in Malaysia, which will open in the fourth quarter with two restaurants and bars, meeting and event space, and a wellness center; and the 158-room Angsana Siem Reap in Cambodia, which will have several dining options, meeting space and a spa.
"Our strong momentum in business development and securing hotel management agreements on our own this year will accelerate Banyan Tree Group's speed and scope of expansion to grow our brands around the world," said Ho Kwon Ping, executive chairman of Banyan Tree, whose integrated resort properties are known for their "exotic" locations, upscale spas and commitment to environmental and social responsibility. "We are excited and committed to propel our brands rapidly to global reach and range while strengthening our ability to embrace change and innovation in the ever-evolving hospitality industry. With our Banyan Tree Group growing from strength to strength and celebrating the 25th Anniversary in 2019, we look forward to greater growth to come."
