Incentive Podcast: How to Celebrate Employee Appreciation Day

Employee Appreciation Day inventor Dr. Bob Nelson discusses how managers can celebrate.

Happy Employee Appreciation Day! The first Friday in March has been given this designation to remind bosses and managers around the country to set aside time to thank their workers for all that they are doing.

For this week's episode of Incentive: What Motivates, we are speaking with the man who 25 years ago invented Employee Appreciation Day. In 1994, Dr. Bob Nelson, then a graduate student studying workplace motivation, published 1,001 Ways to Reward Employees. He and his publisher came upon the idea of drawing extra attention to the value of honoring workers by launching a day devoted to the cause.

The idea took off - and has endured, and Nelson himself has since sold some 5 million copies of his books on management and motivation, and gone on to work with more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies. We spoke with him about why this concept has proven so powerful, why so many managers can still use a reminder about the value of employee appreciation, and some simple ways to celebrate.
